I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

In the Object Explorer select Connect -> Database Engine

You will need to provide a qualified instance name and credentials.

Here's a youtube video to help guide you connecting to a DB with MSSMS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T43LG-P9E1k

Or, a step by step instruction set from a blog entry: http://learningsqlserver.wordpress.com/2011/02/04/sql-server-management-studio-ssms-basics/

Another blog with the same instructions to help you connect: http://blog.arvixe.com/how-to-use-microsoft-sql-server-2008-to-connect-to-your-database/
