Save as or open box greyed out

When trying to open or save as from within an application such as Word, Excel, Adobe Reader, I get a grey box.  See attached.  I have downloaded and installed all updates.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

(1) When did this problem occur?  You may try system restore.

(2) Did you check your computer for malware? Scan with Malwarebyte Antimalware (free).

Ooops.  I forgot to upload it.  The problem started this morning.  I am running malwarebytes scan now.  System Restore from last Thursday did not fix it.
These are two separate actions>When trying to open or save as
when you go to open that opens does not save as
once opened then go file save as?
Your screenshot represents open only
what program is in your snapshot?

Merete, the issue is when clicking Open, or Save As.  See my attachment in my previous post.  The only way I got this to work is to perform a System Restore.
