3TB SAS on Dell PE R710 blinks amber

Hi,

I just installed 5x 600GB on R710 and I would like to add 3TB SAS HDD on the 6th bay for backup purposes. When I add 3TB HDD (new) it blinks amber colour and RAID utility cannot see it.
Doesn't R710 support 3TB SAS HDDs?

What is the raid controller model in the server?

The server, R710, isn't the issue ... it is the controller managing the drives.  Which controller do you have?  The PERC 6/i is limited to 2TB drives.  The PERC H-series controllers will support larger than 2TB drives (with semi-recent firmware).  Non-enterprise drives may or may not be seen at all, regardless of size.

Refer to this article for drive sizes.  Looks like a firmware upgrade was added to the H700 series to be able to see larger that 2tb

There you have it ... you'll need to migrate your VD's to the H700 to use a larger drive than 2TB in this server.

If you did have to upgrade it its about $400 - $500 (at least thats what I paid last year for an H710 with the 512 cache).  It was very easy to swap out.  Dell has excellent support and they will guide you through pretty much anything.

Get the H700 for the R710.  As noted, migration of VD's from a PERC 6 to an H700 is very easy.

Thnak gentlemen. Since it is  a new server swapping is not an issue. Its not something must. If I would be able to utilize that 3TB that would be great. I'll continue 4xRAID10 and 1 HS and leave the 6th bay empty.
