Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 send and receive Issues - Help Plelase

Exchange 2003 is my current email server.  I just finished building a 2010 exchange server and it seems to be running correctly but......
-I can connect to Exchange 2003 via the web, and Outlook client
-I can send mail to my new Exchange server 2010 from my exchange 2003,
-I can send mail to my gmail account(external) to the new email server 2010 and
-I can send mail to users in the company, using the internal domain name
(Internal corp.biotone.com ..........External is Biotone.com)

My Exchange 2010 server is connected to the old mail server 2003,
I can see all the mail boxes in exchange 2010 that are on my exchange 2003 server

-I can add a new user to the exchange 2010 and I am able to use a client to connect to the NEW mailbox,
-I new client can receive email to my gamil account but cannot reply(goes into lala land)
-I can send emails from the old mail server 2003 to the new mail server 2010
-I cannot reply back to any of these environments...I not sure I have a outbound transport setup[ in exchange 2010?

Objectives:
First I like to get the internal email setup correctly to send emails between the legacy email server and the exchange 2010?
(before I start to move mail boxes off the old server 2003)
Second I like to have the capability to send emails from my exchange server 2010 to the outside mail services, like gmail?

So what have I done wrong?

I had many of the same problems when I did a E2k3 to E2k10 "upgrade".  We over-engineered the send/smtp connector coming out of e2k3.  The company had a firewall directing all port 25 traffic to e2k3 which was supposed to forward undeliverable (meaning moved mailboxes) to the e2k10 server.  We could see the messages to be forwarded in the e2k3 queues but they wouldn't move.

Many of the things you wrote above were occurring successfully for us.  Finally we deleted the special smtp connector that was set up from e2k3 to e2k10 and we deleted the receive connector on the e2k10 side and started over.  We put the smtp connector back into place for port 25 traffic from the firewall (Internet email) and confirmed all e2k3 users were receiving email because like you, the bulk of the users were still on e2k3.  Next, as I recall (its been 18 months) we confirmed a send connector was in place to be able to send internal email back to the e2k3 box which then forwarded it to the Internet...no external email was sent out or received from the Internet by the new e2k10 server initially.

As I recall, we followed something like the steps here:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd638130%28v=exchg.141%29.aspx

But as I said we over-engineered the connectors between the two servers by putting one too many smtp connectors outbound from e2k3 to e2k10.

I noticed in reading the above website that an AD group gets created, assuming your e2k3 is in "native" mode...I assume you've done that.  It allows the two servers to send/receive email.

I don't know if any of this helps you but it does and will work.  Once mailboxes were all moved...which btw, failed until we realized there is a permission that must be granted on the e2k3 mailboxes in order to get them to move over...we changed the send connector on the new e2k10 server to send/receive from the Internet (i.e. firewall) and after a couple of months, turned off the old e2k3 server after removing it per Microsoft tech docs.

Scott
First of all, you need a 2-way routing group connector on both servers - Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010.  Do you have these connectors set up?
The routing group connectors allow mail flow between the two Exchange servers.  On the Exchange 2010 server, the Send connector(s) control mail flow to the outside world and the Receive connector(s) control mail flow internally between the server and the clients who are connecting to mailboxes on that server and externally from the outside world to internal mailboxes.  NOTE:  This is in the simplest world possible, which is a single Exchange 2003 server and a single Exchange 2010 server with all mailbox roles on it.  If your configuration is more complex, please post that information here so that we can take it into account.

I had conector setup and in doing testing I removed both, now I think I am SOL.
I think I want to start from the beginning again, but am not sure what the inpact is if I format the server and re-install the OS and then re-install the exchange server?
Or can I rebuild the RGC for the old echange server ?

At this point I should of just copies PST files and the added the emails to the new server once I added the new mail boxes...this migration is not very clean!!!
I removed my connectors and now nothing is working.....except mail flow to the internet.
What the hell have I done...I think I will re-format and start from scratch...Just not sure if I can?
Don't re-format.  Rebuild your connectors.

1) confirm Internet email to/from the Exch 03 users.
2) confirm internal email to/from the Exch 03 users.

3) Since you don't necessarily want to remove roles from the Exch 10 server, start with creating a receive connector on it and use only the IP address of the Exch 03 server and set the permissions I believe to both Exchange Servers and Legacy Exchange (I don't have either Exchange system to look at tonight so am trying to visualize what you'll see)

4) On the Exch 03 create a connector in your routing group that points to the Exch 10 server.  I believe this should be set to SMTP Virtual.

I would guess, like my setup initially, you want all Internet mail to go out of the Exch 03 server until you finishing migrating mailboxes...correct?  If a newly migrated Exch 10 user sends to the Internet, the Exch 10 server should send over to Exch 03 which will handle routing to/from the Internet via your firewall.  You'll need a send connector on Exch 10 for this purpose.

Here are a couple of links I found on a quick search tonight.  I don't have access to the system I worked on several months ago and even if I did, we removed the Exch 03 server about 60 days after all mailboxes were migrated (kept around to make sure nothing was missed during migration).

If you choose to re-format, I assume the server hosting Exch 10, be sure to look for anything left over in AD about the "old" Exch 10 server using ADSIedit (be very careful with this utility though!).

Scott
Thank you I not going to reformat unless a last  resort I tried rebuilding rgc well see in the morning   I was so close now I can only send to internet gmail account. I post more in the morning
if you do choose to reformat, do a clean UNINSTALL of exchange on the server you're going to wipe to avoid a dead server being left behind and causing AD headaches for years.

It's definitely only a last resort to wipe it though....

if you still need help we need to know where we are at present.
Easiest way may be to run the following commands and post the results (after amending a few things for privacy, obviously)

get-routinggroupconnector |fl
get-transportserver |fl
get-transportconfig

I be glad to post these results but am not sure what information I should not post?  AS for testing since last night the new RGC'sI created are not working or?
Please advise...and i will post results..
totallytonto was referring to the fact that you might want to change your domain name in the results before posting for security reasons. That's a common practice here when posting error messages or information that might reveal private information about your network.
Here are the results:

Hi.
You've missed the '| fl' off the end of the 1st 2 commands. Please repost.
I am having some other problems, it seems that the SMTP connector in my exchange 2003 has some routing issues.  I am getting some emails coming back I am not getting a undeliverable but i am getting a lot of message in the queue.  Could this problem be related to0 the RGC I created?
Here we can try this:

Welcome to the Exchange Management Shell!

Tip of the day #35:

Want to change the authentication settings on an Outlook Web Access virtual directory? Try the following command as an e
xample. It changes authentication from forms-based authentication to Windows authentication:

Set-OwaVirtualDirectory -Identity "OWA (Default Web Site)" -FormsAuthentication 0 -WindowsAuthentication 1
