Frequent failure of SQL Server 2008 Backups by using EMC Legoto

We have configured SQL Server backups through EMC Networker, Legoto on our environment and maximum servers were Virtual Servers. We found backup failures frequently due to following error found Event viewer Application log.

Operating system error 995(The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.).                                   SQLVDI: Loc=SignalAbort. Are you backing up the databse using the SQL agent which was granted rights in the sql server security?
Does the system have the VSS and shadow copies enabled?
You also excluded the directory (data, log) to avoid the filesystem backups from trying to backup the active database/transaction log files.
If you do not have the SQL agent for legato, you need to use sql maintenance plan to backup the database to disk backup directory often and then let legato filesystem backup capture those .bak files.

Can you look at the log folder and post errors from xbsa.messages file?
(Example location: C:\Program Files\Legato\nsr\applogs\xbsa.messages)

Following is description of your messages derived from Legato's Error Message Guide:

Received a retryable network error (Severity <n> Number <n>): busy
Message Source
Message Type
The backup server might be busy. The network operation will be retried
automatically until it succeeds.
If this error occurs too many times in a row:
• Verify that the backup server is running.
• Verify that the network protocols are functioning properly. Test by
running ping.

Maybe your backup server is overloaded or your network connection is not working properly. I think you could verify network connection settings/reliability both from vm and host perspective (since you are using virtual servers)
if it is virtual machines giving these errors your virtualization host can be overloaded during the backup hence do networking misbehaviour. try to run the backups on different time of the day one by one if you come to the same error

Do your guests have the disk 'thin provisioned'? While great for labs and testing, its not recommended for production database servers.
