Backup Exec Exceptions failed to snap Exchange Server (GRT)

Hi,

I am using Symantec Backup Exec 2010, and get the following Exceptions on my daily and weekly backup jobs:

Backup- VMVCB::\\vcenter.DOMAIN.LOCAL\VCGuestVm\(DC)DOMAIN(DC)\vm\Discovered virtual machine\EXCH.SERVER
V-79-57344-38727 - Backup Exec failed to snap virtual machine '\(DC)DOMAIN(DC)\vm\Discovered virtual machine\EXCH.SERVER' and was unable to collect the necessary metadata to restore individual application items. You cannot perform GRT-enabled restores of application data from this backup.

The error is specific to my Exchange Server, which should be using GRT so I can restore individual mail items. The Server in question is a VM (2008 R2 DataCenter) on an ESXI 5.0 Host.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Many Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Ahmed,

Many thanks for your help.

I had come across these, the first article I had tried the suggestions (the Agent for Backup Exec has been un/re-installed after reboots either side etc), and the second article isn't really relevant to me - if there's any information you need to further troubleshoot I'd be happy to provide it.

Regards,
Kevin

Kevin, the second article tells you to reinstall BE agent which would resolve the issue, but you already mentioned that you have done this.

Have you checked this also check the the event log of the guest operating system that logs the events each time backup is attempted. For more information on this issue, perform a test NTBackup of the virtual machines.

•The application and/or VSS services have been stopped within the guest operating system
•The application and/or VSS services have failed or produced errors during the backup attempt

Hi Ahmed,

The Event Viewer isn't showing anything at the time the Backup Exec is recording the error, however, there is no VMWare VSS Provider installed in any of the servers, but Backup Exec VSS Provider is. Backup Exec VSS Provider Service is not started on the Server in question, and when I go to it responds with:
Windows could not start the Backup Exec VSS Provider service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Any Suggestions?
Many Thanks,
Kevin

A Virtual machine cannot be backed up using the Backup Exec Agent for VMware Virtual Infrastructure, if both of the following are installed on the virtual machine:

1. The VSS provider that is installed with VMware tools.
2. The Symantec VSS provider (BEVSSProvider) that is installed from the Backup Exec installation CD

To back up the virtual machine, uninstall one of the above mentioned VSS providers

Hi Ahmed,

This has been uninstalled previously (so is no longer present) and still doesn't work, with only the Backup Exec VSS Provider installed. Please advise.

Most of the task you have already performed, give a try to more.

Make sure that Backup Exec Server has been fully patched by running liveupdate

Make sure that the Remote Agent on the Virtual Machine is at the latest version by push installing ir from Backup Exec Server then try to reboot that VM.

You may also try bu disabling GPT and check if that works ?

Finally you can try by RAWS backup of the machine through Windows selection to see if it succeeds or it fails on exchange data.

you should also have a close eye on any backup error either in application or system logs, you should get any clue over there.

Also just try to edit network option, in that you can check option Allow use of any interface and give a try.

Also may be you can try to change Logon Account.

Lastly i would suggest you can check this Symanted hotfix

Hi Ahmed,

Many thanks for the suggestions.

I have fully updated the Backup Exec Server, and pushed the agents out/rebooted.

If I disable GRT on these backups, will I still be able to restore individual emails?

How do I go about a RAWS backup of the machine without using Backup Exec?

I checked the network interface and allow use of any is selected, if the above fail I will try change the logon account - can this be done for a specific server/VM or do you have to change it for the whole selection list?

Many Thanks,
Kevin

You should be able to Use Backup Exec Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) to enable the restore of individual files and folders from virtual machines, unless you are using GPT or Dynamic Disks within the VM. This is not supported.

Backup Exec does not support GRT Backups/Restores of Virtual Machines configured to use virtual disk with GPT.

To do application GRT backups you will also need the correct licenses for the application backup.

Finally you can also try with that hotfix what i have provide in previous comment.

please make sure the backup account has the following rights on all machines to be backed up

Act as part of the operating system
    Create a token object.
    Back up files and directories.
    Restore files and directories.
    Managed auditing and security log.
Logon as a batch job (only for Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 2008).

Hi Ahmed,

These backups previously worked, please see attached screenshot of results using Backup Exec License Assessment Tool (note that Microsoft Exchange Server is a licensed feature).

The hotfix you provided is for Backup Exec 2012, I have 2010 R3 fully patched/updated - would that hotfix still apply?

I have also tried adding in the BEAdmin account as a local administrator on that server (will see results of adding that tonight during daily backup).

Please see attached VSS Providers/Writers List from the server as a result of following the first article.

The patch is only for Backup Exec 2012, sorry for that.

We have almost done all the steps now and as per your update you are saying that backups use to work with GRT enabled ? then all of sudden its not happening, so do you remember after any update it happened or wht ?

As said earlier you may try to perform a RAWS (Remote Agent for Windows Systems) backup of the machine through Windows selections to see if it succeeds or not. Resolve any failure with the RAWS backup and then try again to back up through the virtual agent.

On RAWS you may find several articles on how to do it if you are not aware.

I really don't, there was a period where we were creating additional VMs so errors where I didn't put the agent on certain VMs were quite frequent in the past month or two, so it's hard to put my finger on exactly when or why the error started to occur.

I'll give the RAWS backup a go and see how it does.

No, I can't find any information regarding a RAWS backup, please advise how to complete this.

A combination of things really. I did a complete overhaul of backup exec permissions (through the tools with Backup Exec 2010), and permission levels on the Exchange Server and in AD (Enterprise Admins group, Domain Admins as primary)
