"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

A proxy is for internal clients on a lan going out.  Example would be users on LAN browsing the Internet may have all their requests go through a proxy server (web filter) before the page is either server up or blocked.

A reverse proxy would be clients outside the network (Internet) trying to access resources that are in an internal private network.  The proxy will retrieve the info for the outside client and send it back.

Proxy is an application/service/server that act as a hub or intermediary between a client that is request an information in a networking environment.

Proxy and reverse proxy is almost the same thing but it is the configuration that's difference.

Proxy (Forward proxy) is configure as such that client can go from within a network to the outside world,  Mostly organisation configure thier client to browse internet through the use of proxy, the client computer sends the information to the proxy, which then process the request and returns the information to the client computer.

Reverse proxy is configure as such that as to allow request from outside world to the internal network like in Outlook Web Access(OWA) for Exchange mail.

Some of the example of proxy applications are MS ISA, Winproxy, MS Forefront TMG etc

I hope this helps

An example of reverse proxy would be Microsoft ISA/TMG which will allow access to different components of Exchange (i.e. OAB, Public Folders, MAPI, etc.)
