not working after install (i think)

I am having troubles creating a new Server 2008 R2 SQL Server, I built a 2008 r2 server, then installed SQL server 2008 R2, selected all the defaults, changed the service accounts to a local account I created.

However when I try to connect to the Database Engine from the Management Studio, I get the attached error. I have checked all the services are running.

Anyone got anyidea? or should I just delete the server and start again?

The TCP/IP network protocol is not active by default.  To activate it open the SQL Server Configuration Manager (Start > Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 > Configuration Tools).  Select the Protocols for MSSQLSERVER item (located under SQL Server Network Configuration) in the tree pane and enable TCP/IP.

Check out this article for a lot more detail on what I explained: Connect to your SQL Server

The error message indicates one possible reason.  Is SQL Server configured to allow remote connections?
