Local Area Connection - Internet Connection

I have an XP operated PC & i have installed a new network card with its drivers, however - i still cannot log on to the internet. This XP Machine in particular has about 30 - 35 local connections which i do not know where they come from,at the moment i have disabled them so i can use the external network card one but still does not seem to work. Why am i having this issue & what can i do to solve it?
