Word 2003 Documents corrupted on NAS device and local computers

A small office has been using a nas device to synchronize all word docs and save them to the nas. Users access them from the nas, make changes, nas synchronizes..etc.

All of a sudden, any word files from the nas or ones saved from nas to local computers open with an error:

word cannot start word converter mswrd 632.wpc

We tried the microsoft registry fix and that got rid of the message,  but they still do not open.

We tried copying them to another computer and get the same errors. New word files created will open, so it seems that all of the word files on the nas got corrupted.  Other files on the nas open such as pdf files

Does anyone know how this could have happened. Is there any hope to open the files that are corrupt?

There are thousands of word files that will not open.

If you have a backup of the NAS, it may be a good option to restore the files from backup.

I know I can restore from a back up. That doesn't help. Any ideas what happened? Can it be fixed?

I am having the same issue, so far no luck. You should check if any users machine has a virus. The crytolock virus. It encrypts the file with an RSA encryption. I have been trying to break the encryption but am having no luck.

There is more information on this forum.

good luck. I will update if anything else happens.
