TSM client licenses

Hi wmp.. I need your help...

I have installed TSM client 6.2.5  from the URL from IBM  you have sent  me:

I have installed version 6.2.5 from this site on some LPARs working properly, but a question came to my mind.... Are these packages a trial? Does this need a license?

These are indeed two different things:

Are these packages a trial?

No, they contain full-blown clients.

Does this need a license?

Of course it does (you know IBM, don't you?).

But please don't understand "license" in a technical way here. TSM 6.x no longer requires registering BA client licenses, you can install as many as you like, and you can register as many nodes as you like and perform Backup/Restore against them - technically!

But nevertheless you must have a license for each client - and if this "client" has some kind of "server" functionality (file server, DB server, NIM server ...) this is a basic server license.

Again, there is no "technical" way for the TSM server to compare registered nodes against purchased licenses - you must take care on your own not to run more nodes as purchased.
From time to time IBM will send out a couple of nice guys to your company to audit your license portfolio - well, you know what I mean.

There are two license models - volume and processor based.

Here is how processors (processor value units, "PVU") are counted:

Find details about Tivoli Storage Manager Suite for Unified Recovery ("Volume Model") here:

The tsm client doesn't need a license, the license is on the server side but not from client
