LSI 8480E cache battery replacement

Got an IBM server with additional LSI SAS 8480E attached to an external enclosure, it's complaining the battery needs to be replaced. As far as I can see the battery plus 256MB cache is LSIiTBBU02 / LSI00046-F / LSI00185 but that's rather expensive. Is it possible to replace just the battery and if so what is the spare part number of it?

If you do not replace it all, then you will lose write cache, which means big performance hit.  Pay the money.   (Also avoid cheap batteries on eBay ... you don't know how old they are).

Yes, but I want to know if I can replace just the battery rather than the battery plus cache.

http://beowulf.rutgers.edu/info-admin/unprotected/hw/lsi320-2e/lsi320-2e_BBU_ug.pdf makes me think it might be just  LSIiBBU01 that's needed but I'd rather be safe than sorry if the battery can't be swapped on its own. The server's in production and takes 30 minutes to boot for some reason so I can't just get the customer to shut it down to take the controller out to look at the module.

Sorry, I didn't realize your documentation wasn't clear.  You are supposed to just change the battery, not the DRAM+battery.

IBM spare part according to below for just the battery is39R8853

Looking at Google images though shows 39R8853 to have the 256MB module on it still, and the price is about the same as the LSI 256MB module plus battery. http://www.hawkee.com/shop/prod/25932463/ for example even describes it as 256MB.

Here it is $99.00

(Never mind that is used ...) but the LSI part# for just the battery appears to be LSIITBBU02

Yup, that shows it as having the cache module included, looks like there are just two screws holding the battery onto the card, pity it's not clear enough to get the battery part no off it.

Finally got the cache module plus battery in hand, all the LSI part numbers printed on the battery are for the whole module even though it's only two little screws to separate the dead battery from the perfectly good cache module. Seems there is a bit of a con job going on here with LSI refusing to sell the "battery only" option for about $100 and forcing you to buy the whole cache module for close to $400 instead.

Best I've come up with is to buy the battery plus a zero memory charger board using http://beowulf.rutgers.edu/info-admin/unprotected/hw/lsi320-2e/lsi320-2e_BBU_ug.pdf as a reference and then transferring the battery pack from the cheap charger board to the more expensive cache board. There's still a load of good electronics going in the bin due to LSI not selling "battery only" kits so they're on my list of environmentally unfriendly manufacturers.

I thought there was an LSI expert at EE but apparently not, or at least not one that would provide any useful information.

Could have saved $300 by buying the cheaper board to get hold of the good battery from it.
