Created Distribution in AD without mailbox, can't see in GAL. When mailbox is associated to group, can see it in GAL. Why?!

hi guys

I've created a distribution group in AD without a mailbox associated to it,  and I can't see it. However, when I associate a mailbox to it in the Exchange management console in the section 'Distribution Group', I can.

Why does this happen? I recall creating groups all of the time in previous companies and it wasn't an issue. Is this a settings issue or can this be modified?

Thank you
Yash

I created it on the Domain Controller, in the Active Directory.

I know that if I create the group via Exchange, it will create that group in AD also. So that's how I should be doing it, yes?
Yes you should use AD tools like dsa.msc from exchange server when you perform exchange related activities because exchange management shell associated with that. You are not able to see it in GAL because the exchange activity like creating display name, mail address activity not performed.
