Exchange and Outlook 2010 - GAL Address book download Issue.

Hope someone can help me out.
We have Exchange: Version: 14.02.0342.003 - 2010 and
Outlook 2010 – on Client machines.

I cannot figure out why Outlook is not downloading the GAL when you press download address list.

I have tried in cache mode and without.

Can someone please give me some pointers on what to look for as something is wrong on the config.

Thank you in advance.

Regards

Darren

Outlook will download addressbook (Offline Address Book) when it is in cached mode, before suggesting anything please give details mentioned below,

- Are you able to resolve the address and search on GAL when using OWA ?
- Do you see the address book when outlook is online (not cached)
- any error message when you try to download address boook (OAB)

Hello,

In OWA when I press TO: I get all the company address exactly as it is shown in AD and Exchange.

When outlook is working online I am able to do the same, all address`s are showing.

When I download the address book, it all completes with no errors. But no contacts are added to outlook.

Regards

Darren
can you perform a test Email auto configuration from outlook (when in cached mode) and let me know if success.

see if you are able to see the OAB URL there, and update the value (you may modify the server name if needed).

http://www.addictivetips.com/microsoft-office/outlook-2010-test-email-auto-configuration/
Hello, Thank you.

the OAB is showing https://** Our Domain **/OAB/6c22f4c6-0aa5-4200-9c87-5d71d597d283/

Regards

Darren
HTTPS will show for the Protocol Exchange HTTP, what it shows for Exchaneg RPC.

Ideally it should show http://server.domain.local/oab/6c22f4c6-0aa5-4200-9c87-5d71d597d283/

I assume that the Offline addressbook download had never worked, if that the case please verify that the OAB generation is working or not,

Navigate to Org Configuration -> Mailbox -> Offline Address Book (tab).
Select default offline addressbook, and go to properties to see if it is selected to 'include default Global Address List'

after that, do an update of it.

let me know the update.

-Praveen
The operation couldn't be performed because object 'Default Offline Address Book' couldn't be found on ** REMOVED server.domain.local **
am.com'.
    + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (0:Int32) [Update-OfflineAddressBook], ManagementObjectNotFoundException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : E5132D44,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.SystemConfigurationTasks.UpdateOfflineAddressBook

Regards

Darren
Looks like the Offline Address book is having some issues,

create a new OAB, and select to include default Global Address List. Modify the OAB properties on the database with the "newly created address book" from the client settings tab.
Hiya, Yep done that, and made the changes.

>Update-OfflineAddressBook -Identity "NT-OfflineAB"

Does not return an error on PS, Tried to do an update but still nothing. But I think I will have to wait while it does its thing.

Regards

Darren
Hello, Good Morning.

I have check it today and still not downloading the address book?

Regards

Darren
Hello, I have put on error logging on High for OAB and getting

OAL Gen trucked or dropped properties for "Domain User" in address list "\Global Address List" because they have exceeded the configured size limits for the version 4 offline address list.

The affected MAPI ids are 8008 8c9e.

Any Ideas?

Regards

Darren
try this, but do you have still ex 2003 in your org ?

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124220(v=exchg.65).aspx

Please verify that the offline generation server is set to the new server (mailbox role is must).  Ensure that you set the client settings of database properties to reflect the newly created OAB changes to end users.

-Praveen
Hello, Good Afternoon.

I Created a new OAB and pointed the database to the new OAB, and Done the update.

I checked the above link, we are running exchange 2010 and I could not find that path in the registry

I am wondering if it is something in IIS I am missing.. Any advise as I am stuck.

Regards

Darren
few things,
 - Ensure that the OAB url (Exchange RPC) is pointing to the local server/oab/<uid> , not pointing to the external domain/oab/<uid>

- IIS, navigate to OAB virtual directory and verify the SSL settings and ensure the Require SSL is cleared. (if it is checked, clear the check box and restart IIS)

- Do a test Email configuration as I requested earlier, and share the XML tab result if possible to look at the autconfiguration details.

- Ensure Web Distribution is enabled on OAB properties from EMC Organization Configuration), and see the path "C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\ClientAccess\OAB" for OAB folder and files.

- Expand Server Configuration and select the server responsible for OAB generation, and open the properties of 'OAB (Default Website)' from the Offline Address Book Distribution tab . Verify the URLs there, and see if it matches with the XML values.

- Enable Diagnostic Logging of OAB Generation to High and see for related errors.

OfflineAddressBook :
Few things observed are (looks like migrated from ex 2003),

<LegacyDN>/o=*OurDomain.co.uk*/ou=First Administrative Group/cn=Recipients/cn= *Username*</LegacyDN>

 <ServerDN>/o=*Our-Domain*/ou=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)/cn=Configuration/cn=Servers/cn=NT-EXCH-2010</ServerDN>

Why there is a difference in DN of user and exchange server.

Request you to create a new user mailbox, and repeat the same (test config). See if you are able to get the LegacyDN OU name as ou=Exchange Administrative Group

Also verify the OAB download on new mailbox, see any difference.

run the below cmdlet and share the result as is (modify if required but keep the domain extensions, i.e. .local, .co.uk etc,  unchanged)

Get-OabVirtualDirectory -Server npccexhdr1 | fl Identity,*url*

The modify version of previous XML is with many misleading information.
Hello, Good Morning, Thank you for your assistance.

Yes this was a migration from 2003, and don't think this has ever worked since.

I have created a new account and tried to download the OAB and still not contacts showing.

Result from the CMD Line:

[PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-OabVirtualDirectory -Server nt-exch-2010 | fl Identity,*url*

Identity    : NT-EXCH-2010\OAB (Default Web Site)
InternalUrl : https://domain.com/OAB
ExternalUrl : https://domain.com/OAB

what is the SSL settings on OAB virtual directory in IIS ? uncheck if SSL if checked.

Also, change the
InternalUrl : http://server_fqdn/OAB

restart the IIS and test the new account (the test details on new account is fine).

re-do the test outlook config and share the OAB URL in XML.

Where can I change this:

SSL.PNG
You do not have to modify that, what happens when you download OAB now on oultook (use only the newly created account).

Can you verify that you have some contents (OAB Filders and files inside) available @ below path,
C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\ClientAccess\OAB

also the output of below commands
Get-OabVirtualDirectory -Server server_name | select *url*,*auth*,Server
Get-OfflineAddressBook | select Name,VirtualDirectories,*DistributionEnabled,Server
I assume that that OAB generation is now happens normally (post if the OAB update fails).

-Praveen
Hiya. Thank you for your help with this..

There is a folder called:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\ClientAccess\OAB\feabda33-943c-4582-bd55-0697a20cd531

There are 103 items .lzh files

The output from the command is:

InternalUrl                   : http://nt-exch-2010.domain.com/OAB
ExternalUrl                   : https://connect.domain.com/OAB
BasicAuthentication           : False
WindowsAuthentication         : True
InternalAuthenticationMethods : {WindowsIntegrated}
ExternalAuthenticationMethods : {WindowsIntegrated}
Server                        : NT-EXCH-2010

On the client outlook it looks like it is downloading the OAB but no contacts show up.

Regards

Darren
also get the details of
Get-OfflineAddressBook | select Name,VirtualDirectories,*DistributionEnabled,Server,Guid

Ensure that the database of new mailbox client settings is pointing to the newly create Offline Address Book.

-Praveen
Output from CMD:

Name                            : OAB
VirtualDirectories              : {NT-EXCH-2010\OAB (Default Web Site)}
PublicFolderDistributionEnabled : True
GlobalWebDistributionEnabled    : False
WebDistributionEnabled          : True
Server                          : NT-EXCH-2010
Guid                            : feabda33-943c-4582-bd55-0697a20cd531

Yes: Database is pointing to OAB

Try downloading the AddressBook manually from outlook, and see if the send/receive finishes without errors (delete any OAB files in client computer OST path).

the details looks healthy, you should be able to get the OAB downloaded.

If ipv6 is enabled on the client desktop machine, uncheck it and restart the machine before you proceed with the testing (only on outlook client machine not on server). Ping the ex2010  from client desktop and ensure you get ipv4 as ping response.

-----

One thing is sure, the ex 2003 decommissioning did not happen correctly. The default OAB is still pointing to the old infra servers. Which you will need to look at even if it worked.
Hiya.

On the outlook client in event view it reports the OAB has downloaded successfully, but still no contacts.

wait for a some time, see if there are any changes, maximize the OAB generation logging and look for any events related to OAB generation while updaing the OAB.

look for data under the directory on client desktop - C:\Users\user_logon_account\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Offline Address Books

Download the OABValidate tool and check

Do you have outlook 2003 in your network? , if not please follow the below steps just to check.

Open the proerties of OAB , and navigate to Distribution tab.
clear the check mark on
- Outlook 98 SP2 or Later (Version 3)
- Outlook 2003 SP2 or later (Version 4)

update it again and observe the event logs with logging expert level.
Just to confirm which option needs to be selected?
