Primary DC (Windows 2003 Svr)

I want to move my primary Domain Controller (DC) that is currently on a old and outdated hardware to a new one (I inherited this environment).  I am also thinking of going with a VM instead of a physical via my Eqaullogic SAN.  There are tools that can be used to "virtualize" the environment but not sure if I want to replicate the environment or just go with a new one.  I know I can use dcpromo to remove a DC but I can't say that I have ever moved one before to a newer physical box or VM.

Do you have any suggestions you can provide on the best course of action I should take?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I would just add a new server VM. promote the new server to a dc in the domain>move all the FSMO roles to the new VM DC then you can demote the old server

It's recommended to

1. Create a new server or virtual machine and install your Server OS.
2. Promote this new server to a Domain Controller.
3. Transfer the roles from the old DC to the new DC.
4. Remove and Shutdown the old Server.
