Migration from OCS 2007 R2 to Lync 2013 no Edge Servers

As the title implies, I am tasked with migrating our simple chat only OCS 2007 R2 system to a Lync 2013 system. We already have a Lync server up and running that we tested with and now we want to migrate the existing users to the new server. All documentation and information I can find talks about having edge servers on the existing and new environment. My question is can this be done with out edge servers? We do not currently nor do we plan on implementing access externally.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Sure ...

only thing for the edge servers is getting external traffic in to Lync/OCS - IF you'd deploy in.
Just keep migrating, no hassle what so ever.

Thank you! Everything I see regarding instructions and videos end up using edge servers so I just wanted to make sure.

So I have attempted to merge my topologies. I have followed the guidelines of updating OCS to CU11, I have WMI Backwards Compatibility installed on the Lync Server. However when I try to merge the topologies in the Topology Builder, I get the following errors:

ah ... topology looks good.
But I'm afraid you have to take this further with Microsoft; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2455114
