How to migrate vc configuration form vc 4.1 to 5.1

we have plan to upgrade vsphere 4.1 to vsphere 5.1..and

on current vc 4.1, we  also have esx 3.5 in diff datacenters , so we are planning to create new vc 5.1 and move only 4.1 stuff  form existing to new vc 4.1 to proceed on upgrade

please advice if there is any dependency /prerequisites we have to follow before going ahead?

like database dependency for  new vc 4.1..any new db has to be created ? for sso/update manager/new instance to have earlier perf data as well  ?

h/w prerequisites  to be considered for new vc 5.1

and how can we migrate configuration form vc 4.1 to new vc 5.1..like resource pool/folder/permission?

is there any automated solution like script/utility can be used to avoid any manual error?

or if we have to configure it manully?

If you perform an in-place upgrade, all the settings and configuration will be maintained.

i will prepare new vm for vc 5.1 in same network with same vlan id /subnet & with new db instance on same db server.

please advice what does it mean like in place upgrade ? is it like have to upgrade existing vc 4.1 to 5.1 only ?

that i cant do because i also have running environment for esx 3.5 on my existing vc, and that ll create panic if i go directly upgrade to 5.1

so we are planning to create new vc 5.1 vm in same network..then we ll move esx/esxi 4.1 environment to vc 5.1 to proceed on further upgrade

Please advice..if we can migrate(export then import on new vc5.1) config form existing vc 4.1 to another vc 5.1 vm  ?

or if any other better way to perform upgrade.. with minimum risk included ?

Yes, you insert the 5.1 media, and up 4.1 to 5.1

You cannot migrate configuration from one vCenter to another, only if you upgrade.

is it possible if we take host/ cluster profile form vc 4.1 and import to vc 5.1 ?

No. You cannot do that.

To migrate changes, upgrade from 4.1 to 5.1.
