How to execute series of commands in background in LINUX?

iam trying to execute the below commands in background but iam getting out from prompt and not displaying the pid also..kindly help please....

bharathkumar@vm0:~$ sleep 100 ; cal > /tmp/bk1&  


Prompt not quitting ...  

could you please tell me how to execute the  sleep in background please
