Setting permissions for a user

We are using SharePoint 2007, when I add users to the SharePoint groups Home visitors and restricted readers these users can still download the files and edit them. I just want them to view the files, not download the files.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

could you please explain what you mean with "View the files" ?
Should they see only the content of a document library (just a list of files) but not able to download?
Or should they be able to View the content of the file but no download?
Or are you talking about list items with attachments?

Hi Rainer,

"View the files" meaning seeing the contents eg. excel files of a DL, and viewing these excel files without being able to edit and download these excel files.

I placed these users in the SharePoint Viewers group but they can still edit and download these excel files.
