Office documents all show as corrupt

As of yesterday, we cannot open any Office documents from the file server. If they try to open an Access database they get the error, "Unrecognized database format". If they try to open a Word document they get, "The file <filename> .docx cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents". In the details of the error it says, "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened".

We can open Office files that are saved on another server.

The other thing we have noticed is if we pull one of the files off the server onto a thumb drive, it still cannot be opened.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

No significant changes. The server was rebooted a day or so ago. We checked the dates of last installed updates and that was back in July. This is a customer of ours so we're checking to see what their backup situation is.

I know that the latest round of Windows updates (Sept. 10, 2013) caused problems with MS Office apps. You may want to restore the computers to a time previous to the updates (try on ONE PC to see if this is an issue).

Ended up being a Crypto Virus the encrypts all Office files. After they are encrypted, Office can't open them. We've worked with our antivirus vendor. They can remove the virus but there is currently no decrypt tool so we have to restore from backups.

for the following reason:

Found out it was the CryptoLocker virus while working with our a/v vendor.
