web application security

hi,

I would like to know about below security approaches used in web applications.

programmatic security with ssl
vs
pure programmatic security
vs
combined container managed and programmatic security
 vs
pure declarative security.

How to use each one. what are advantages, disadvantages of each one. When to use which one.

Please advise.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

SSL/TLS only encrypts network communications, nothing else.  You need a certificate that is appropriate to the application and domain name.  You install it and use it.

The other things sound like advertising slogans.  Where are you seeing these things?
