Project bidding web site - PHP script or Wordpress Theme?

Hello Experts,

Looking for advice - what do you recommend for setting a new web site similar to eLance, Freelance, Guru, etc - PHP script or Wordpress Theme? Pros and cons?
There are many there available... I'm not programmer/web dev so easy setup, maintenance and (cheaply) upgradable is asset. Code source should be available so I don't need to depend on original developer.
Any recommendation is appreciated.

Thanks!

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I personally would use WordPress and a plugin or theme (of which there are many) to create an eLance clone.  There are no hard and fast pros and cons between doing that and using a custom PHP script, though.

Both solutions rely on "someone else's code" so you are equally vulnerable to exploits and hacks based on the code

Both solutions present you with source code so you can modify and tweak as needed

Both solutions should be relatively easy to set up.

That being said, I think WordPress deployment and maintenance is easier to deal with. This comes at a complexity cost (themes and plugins can be complex animals) down in the code but may be worth it for the sake of speed.

In the end, it will come down to the way you are most comfortable working, not our recommendations :)

Drupal is another solution, but possible has a steeper learning curve. However the Drupal community is huge, so lots of help is available. I have used Wordpress and Drupal and find Drupal easier to configure. You can create a new type of content, and add the components you want to have, and create a new user type which only has permissions for certain content types.  And you can create "Views" which show specific fields of content that you want to show. I am not sure, but maybe Wordpress can do all this too?

Yes, WordPress has supported custom post types for many years now :)

We could also throw Joomla into the mix...

HTML5 and CSS3 Fundamentals

Build a website from the ground up by first learning the fundamentals of HTML5 and CSS3, the two popular programming languages used to present content online. HTML deals with fonts, colors, graphics, and hyperlinks, while CSS describes how HTML elements are to be displayed.

Thanks for that information about Wordpress Jason.

As far as Joomla is concerned, Drupal has an exponentially larger community, so you are much more likely to find the exact module that you need, or technical support with Drupal.

Thank you for your comments so far.
What I could see in the short research most of available auction sites are done in PHP but most visually appearing are provided with WP themes. Not sure how popular are Drupal and Joomla for this use.
