Motherboard that can use Xeon E5-4607 CPU?

I've been given a unique opportunity to get my hands on a bunch of high end server equipment for a very good price (clearance items from a distributor who occasionally gets refurbished equipment from companies that have gone out of business).

Among the things I've managed to get my hands on, are several Intel Xeon E5-4607 processors.

What motherboards are compatible with this CPU that I could use to build a server?

This is a Socket 2011 CPU, so any Xeon-compatible Socket 2011 motherboard will work.

I was thinking this might be the case, but wasn't sure because the motherboards all list "e5-2600 series" as the compatible CPU... it's nice to get second opinions for you guys, and it's great to hear that this CPU may actually be usable in a build for me :)

Can you comment on this board, just to confirm I haven't obviously overlooked something?

The reviews aren't that great... but it seems that most people are complaining about RAM issues which are actually being caused by the board touching the metal chassis of their case.   I'll be careful of that, and it's going to get mounted in a proper Chenbro 4U server case, not just a desktop tower. Others main complaints I see in the reviews is the CPU heatsink requiring some proprietary connectors. I'll make sure I get a compatible one like this (

Any other boobytraps I'm that I might be missing?

Potentially HUGE boobytrap:   BIOS support for the 4000 series CPUs.

Although the CPU shows that it's compatible with the C602 chipset in that board, the BOARD does not show any support for that series of processors.    Nor do ANY of the boards in the Newegg list of Socket 2011 server boards that I posted above -- even though they all use the C602 or C606 chipset.    That's unusual, since the processor shows compatibility with those chipsets, and is a Socket 2011 component.

The ONLY Intel motherboards that Intel lists as compatible are not available individually -- only as a part of some barebone servers they sell.

If you DO want to take a chance on this, I'd use a board with the C606 chipset, which has 2600v2 compatibility.   As near as I can tell, the 4607 is essentially a quad-CPU version of the E2600v2 family, so it MAY work okay on a board that supports those.    But without proper BIOS support, it's difficult to say.   It's likely that it will work fine ... just won't properly support SMP (and if you only install one processor that shouldn't matter ... but it's also possible it simply won't work.

If you want to be SURE it will work, you'll need an Intel barebone chassis that's designed for these processors ... and that is pricey.    [But it will let you build a 4-processor system :-) ]

From your comments, then maybe it sounds like this would be the most appropriate motherboard to get:

Cross my fingers... and worst case scenario, if it doesn't work then I'm going to have to go out and spent the $420 on a Xeon E5-2620 processor.

A 4P intel build is going to be way out of budget for me, as awesome as that would be.

Yes, that's what I'd try.    An E5-4607 MAY work in that board, although it will likely be mis-identified by the BIOS.    If it doesn't work, it won't hurt either the chip or the board ... it just won't work.

If that's the case, you could either return the board and absorb a 15% restocking fee;  or just buy an E6-26xx processor .... I'd get the E5-2620v2 Ivy Bridge unit: [ ]

Supermicro sells a setup you need (quad socket R). They have excelletn chassis and mainboards. Here's a barebones that is exactly what you need. Just put 4 of them in a system and call it a day. Everyone should experience that power once :).

Shop around as I've seen places as low as 1900$ for the chassis. It really is a bargain. Quad socket r mainboard with enterprise quality construction. Redundant 1400 Platinum certified power supplies. And 4 heatskinks (that's a good 100$+ right there).

Note the size, however => you'll need a big case to fit it in if you don't buy the Supermicro chassis designed for it.

garycase that mainboard is a proprietary fitting. I don't know of any quad socket mainboard that isn't proprietary in size and mounting. The reason these are all barebones is because it's all custom to get the necessary airflow and positioning for 4 of these massive processors to work in such a small space and still have any room for PCI-E slots and I/O.

Coming back to this question just to post my results.

I ended up springing for the SuperMicro X9DR3-F motherboard here:

It has the Intel C606 chipset, and seemed to be a no-compromises everything-and-the-kitchen-sink dual processor motherboard.


I have 2x Xeon E5 4607 processors and 32GB of RAM running inside one of these and it's running VMWare ESXi 5.5 without any issues. Performance is fantastic, and VMWare sees 24 logical processors (Two 6-core processors, with hyperthreading capability).

VMWare, the SuperMicro board, and the VMs themselves all recognize the CPU by it's proper name E5-4607. They don't mistakenly think it's a 2000-series CPU.

I'm really happy this ended up working out.
