Windows Firewall/Defender services not running

Hi
I have a laptop which stopped receiving DHCP assigned addresses. If i set it statically then everything worked fine but then i noticed that a whole load of services werent running. These are
Diagnostic Policy Service
Function Discovery Resource Publication
Network Location Awareness
Offline Files
Windows Firewall
WWAN Autoconfig
Microsoft .NET Framework
Windows Defender

If i try to start any of the services manually then i get various different error messages. I have tried various instructions online to resolve it but to no avail. I'm not sure which service i should be focussing my efforts on first

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Chris

Launch msconfig and make sure all services and starup items are enabled.

Uninstall your security software ..reboot and then try starting services manually.

Make sure dhcp client service is started so that you system gets ip address.

Run sfc /scannow ...reboot and check.

I would expect that from the error messages given when you try starting those services and from errors in the system log, you ought to be trace back to some missing system files that you could copy in from another machine.

I would also scan the machine with a copy of something like MalwareBytes:

Thank you so much. This sorted most  of the services. The Network location service still wasnt running but with the help of this page

http://mjmcfalls.wordpress.com/2012/04/07/network-location-awareness-service-terminated-with-service-specific-error-1073741288/

everything is back up and  running again

Glad that fixed it.

Make sure you still scan your PC with MalwareBytes as this all sounds suspicious of a malicious cause.

I had already tried malwarebytes and it didn't find anything. But I will try it again.

Thanks again
