Desk top icons disappeared

My desk top icons have disappeared  . . .
I cant drag images onto desk top any more.
It is a blank blue screen.

I have opened Finder window and selected Finder, Preferences.
and clicked the General tab.
All the checks still mark what I wish to display on the desktop . . . Hard disks, External disks, CDs, DVDs, iPods, and Connected Servers.

What do I still need to do?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

sounds like malware... run a scan using webroot

It is VERY rarely Malware on OSX and the kind of issue you are highlighting sounds more like Finder preferences and not Malware.

It could be some corruption or damage to the Finder settings.

1. Does the problem/issue persist after you logout and shutdown the Mac and then restart and login again?

If the answer to question 1 is YES then Open System Preferences, create a NEW User account with "Administrator" permissions.

Logout and then login with the new user account and see is the Desktop working as normal.
2. Let us know if the desktop works normally for the new user

Please report back on these 2 questions and we can give you more options to resolve.
