Software protection service has stopped on server 2008

Hi

I have a server that dies about once a week.  But today it has stopped twice.  I noticed just before the Application errors that show when it stops responding there is a 903 error in event logs.
When this happens I cannot get onto machine with either Remote desktop or Logmein.  I have to hard reboot.

I read about setting this service to manual, but I cant see how that can help.

thanks Terry

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

This is event associated with SPPSVC service startup and shutdown. The service is designed to shut down when nobody is using it. An application may call SL API, which will cause the service to wake up.

Is there any pattern on when this is happening? You have a monitoring/management tool checking the licencing status of the server, which will require the service to start. You can double-check the frequency of the scheduled task that usually handles the starting of the service within the Scheduled Tasks MMC here: Task Scheduler Library\Microsoft\Windows\SoftwareProtectionPlatform If the value for "Last Run Time

What application(s) did you have install on the server?

I've requested that this question be deleted for the following reason:

Hi
Thanks for info.
But I was gathering the answers for you when I noticed the time on the 903.  It was the last thing before my errors, but it was 6 hours before.  Therefore it cant be the reason for my crash.

Thanks Terry

I was deleting it because its got nothing to do with SPS.  And I need to do some more analysis before asking experts for help.
