Image displayed by EXIF data?

It looks like Windows 8 previews images by EXIF data. Is it any way to disable this function?

You must be running into auto-rotation issues, another one of Win8's crazy features you can't bypass.

Have you tried going to:  Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Default Programs and enabling Windows Photo Viewer as Default (will only default for things like jpg, gif, png, etc.)

This has worked on a few images for me.
