Citrix Slow Sessions

Hi Experts,

One of our citrix environments (newly built) is exhibiting slow behavior when clients connect via the web interface. I have investigated the issue and found that the problem occurs when the launch.ica file is created. In one of the environments this is generated in less than a couple of seconds, but in the faulty one it can take up to a minute

Any idea on what could be causing this behavior?

We are running citrix 6.5

This can be any number of factors.
Some items:
1. Slow authentication of the user
2. Slow enumeration of user groups
3. Slow enumeration of published apps
4. Slow enumeration of published apps available

Is this an entire environment, or just a specific server that is slow?
Is it every connection on that particular WI server?

Its the entire environment for this one domain
Other citrix environments running off other domains work absolutely fine

Its also for the purposes of testing just 2 servers, one gateway and one xenapp server

Looking at the ica files created the major difference s the TRWD. On the other services this is low at 15, on the troublesome service it takes 4540 to obtain a ticket from the STA service

Big Business Goals? Which KPIs Will Help You

The most successful MSPs rely on metrics – known as key performance indicators (KPIs) – for making informed decisions that help their businesses thrive, rather than just survive. This eBook provides an overview of the most important KPIs used by top MSPs.

Ping is fine. Also the environment is virtual so the different citrix environments sit on the same hardware and network infrastructure

The only thing different is that the domains AD has 2 servers. One local to the virtual environment and one at a remote site down a VPN tunnel. Its possible that for some reason citrix is authenticating with the remote AD rather than the local, but im not sure how to force it to only authenticate with the local

do you have a edgesight in your environment? if so check for session start up time duration. for authentication please check http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd857231.aspx

Unfortunately no we dont. I can be certain its the authentication either though as the problem is not present during remoting onto the box using terminal services

ok did checked event viewer for errors?

The idea of authentication against a DC across a remote VPN site seems to be a very likely candidate for the source of your problems.

Do you have your sites defined correctly with the correct site costs for the VPN tunnel? That will greatly influence which DC your Citrix boxes try to authenticate against.

Probably not...Its controlled in DNS isnt it? Site cost i mean?
0
CoralonCommented:
No. Site cost is defined in Sites & Services.  This is where you will define your sites, link costs, etc.

Hi Coralon,

Looking at sites and services, it looks like the two sites are defined with the correct AD servers in each and the correct subnets assigned

Looking at the Inter-site Transport, the cost is 10

Should this be increased?

CoralonCommented:
It depends on if you have other sites..  Your cost between the AD servers & RDS/WI servers needs to be lower than the cost to other sites.. If you don't have other sites, then this is irrelevant, and we have to look at another possibility.
