Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500 "needs WIA driver" Win 7 32

This scanner keeps losing its ability to scan.  When I try to initiate a scan from the Devices and Printers by right clicking and "start scan" it comes back that we need a WIA driver.

I have removed the scanner, downloaded and installed the Fujitsu software, rebooted, reconnected the scanner and the same thing happens.

I'm feeling like I need to do a more comprehensive removal first.  How?  Or, what else should I be doing?

The entire Fujitsu ScanSnap series does not have a WIA driver. It also does not have an ISIS or TWAIN driver. The ScanSnap scanners have no standard drivers and therefore cannot be used to scan from any other software. Fujitsu created proprietary scanning drivers for the ScanSnap series and the only way to scan is with the ScanSnap software. The good news is that it produces standard PDF files, both image-only and searchable image (with a layer of text created by OCR). You can easily configure the ScanSnap Manager to place the scanned docs in a folder so that other apps may process can even launch other apps in the ScanSnap Manager. There's a lot of functionality in the ScanSnap software, but one thing it does not have is a standard scanning driver, such as ISIS, TWAIN, or WIA. Regards, Joe

OK.  So we installed the ScanSnap software and then try to scan from the machine (which is the normal method) It just blinks and then stops blinking and nothing happens and nothing comes up on the screen.

If I try to scan from Devices and Printers, that's when I get the complaint about WIA.  So, this must be a Windows connection that doesn't work.

Still, the scanner doesn't work.

In the system tray (notification area) you should have an icon that looks like this:
ScanSnap Manager icon system trayRight-click on it and you'll get a context menu like this:
ScanSnap Manager context menuSelect [Scan Button Settings...] and configure all of the parameters in all of the tabs properly. Let me know if that fixes it. If not, we'll try something else. Regards, Joe

I was having the same issue as Fred. The issue occurs when the ScanSnap Manager is not running. Pressing the scan button or trying to scan through the Devices and Printer generates the error mentioned above. So I recommend going to the program list and running ScanSnap Manager this way. Hope this helps.
