You will not need to run adprep on 2003 R2, what you need to do is to check to ensure that the Domain Functional level is set to Windows 2003 mode.

To check this
1. Open the Active Directory Users and Computer console
2. Select the domain, right click on it
3. Select "Raise Domain Functional Level" check the current domain functional level.
4. If this is not already at Windows 2003 mode, you will need to change this.

You cannot start add feature and roles on your Windows 2012 to join the server to teh existing Active Directory.
