How to increase the resolution in a picture

Hi, I am trying to "increase" NOT resize the resolution of a picture.
I was looking for some software on line, but I ended up downloading a bunch of spyware. Does anyone know about some decent free software that allow me to increase the resolution of my pictures please.

thank you very much

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Here is a free app that is supposed to work pretty well:

If you are simply wanting to change DPI then I use Irfanview for this.

The Image > Resize option has a specific setting to alter DPI of the loaded image without resizing.

There's a step-by-step guide here on its use and some other options in terms of software (i.e. XnView and Photoshop)

I agree with MASQUERAID's recommendation of IrfanView. The step-by-step guide he mentioned is good, although the IrfanView screenshot is from an old version. Here's the Resize/Resample dialog from the latest version (4.36):
IrfanView Resize-Resample DPIBe sure to change just the DPI setting (circled in red), i.e., do not change the Width and Height in the [Set new size] or [Set new size as percentage of original] sections.

As a side comment, I suggest that you install the PlugIns for IrfanView. They have some great features, including support for PDF files. You likely won't need the PlugIns for this project, but they may prove very helpful in future use of IrfanView. Install IrfanView first, then the PlugIns. Download links for both are on the left side at the IrfanView home page. Regards, Joe
