Upgrading HP Blade c7000 BL 490c G7 with ESXi 5.1 installable

Hi Folks,

I'm about to perform ESXi 4.1 upgrade into 5.1 with the ESXi 5.1 Update 1 ISO image (VMware-VMvisor-Installer-5.1.0.update01-1065491.x86_64.iso) because the ESXi was already installed in the blade, so what sort of steps or thing that I need to do to successfully upgrade it ?

I would recommend using HP branded ESXi build.  This will have all the network card/hba drivers slip streamed into the image as well as hp specific alarms and ability to report on smart array controller and drives.

ok, do you mean using the HP Custom Image for VMware ESXi 5.1.0 Update 1 Install CD
 .ISO image file (VMware-ESXi-5.1.0-Update1-1065491-HP-5.50.26.iso) from:

VMware Official Site

Because when I tried to download the file from: https://vibsdepot.hp.com/hpq/custom/vsphere51U1 it is failed due to 404 error ?

The build from the VMware site should do the trick.

thanks Paul,

After reading: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=120&prodSeriesId=4268682&prodTypeId=329290&objectID=c03650853

Does this means that I will need to upgrade my HP blade BL 490c G7 Firmware before installing the HP Custom Image for VMware ESXi 5.1.0 Update 1 Install CD from VMware website ?

Paul SolovyovskySenior IT AdvisorCommented:
That is the initial release of 5.1, the one you're downloading is 5.1 Update 1.  Also it would be good to do a crosscheck of the actual hardware and see if it applies.  If it's not in the HP build of the ESXi ISO it will most likely not be in the VMware build of the ISO either.  You may need to add drivers in manually but this happens infrequently.

Ah yes Paul, you are right, the one that I'm downloading: VMware-ESXi-5.1.0-Update1-1065491-HP-5.50.26.iso is the latest from VMware custom ISO for tHP server).

So what about the ESXi 5.1 offline bundle ?

am I supposed to include that into the .ISO file ?
0
Paul SolovyovskySenior IT AdvisorCommented:
offline bundle is if you install a VMware build of ESXi and afterwards install the HP Insight Manager.  Installing the HP build is a much more elegant solution.

The one you're downloading looks like correct one.

ah cool, because I was worried to include that offline bundle for the ESXi 4.1 upgrade to ESXi 5.1 U1 in the Blade BL 490c G7 tomorrow.

So I guess the HP customized ESXi VMware-ESXi-5.1.0-Update1-1065491-HP-5.50.26 is good enough to proceed with the blades upgrade.

Is tehre anything that i need to install for the HP Blades ESXi servers ?

Paul SolovyovskySenior IT AdvisorCommented:
nope.  I would make sure the firmware on the blades is current if possible, otherwise the ISO should do the trick, just did a few BL460G7

Many thanks for the information Paul,

Based on this doco: http://vibsdepot.hp.com/hpq/recipes/February2013VMwareRecipe5.0.pdf

my current firmware is dated back since 2011, Because I'm not sure which firmware that needs to be upgraded ?

c7000 enclosure ? Virtual Connect Module ?
Bl 490c G7 -- iLO ? System ROM ?

Should I do the Firmware upgrade after the ESXi upgrade or before the ESXi upgrade ?

I don't think it matters when you do it, but checking the VMware HCL couldn't hurt.  I would also do one in a vmware cluster to baseline and if you have any issues troubleshoot and resolve before proceeding with the rest

Should be ok but a pilot install and validation is always preferred.
