asked on

can i turn on circular logging, clean up disk issue and then turn it back off

I am running out of space on log files disk

Can I turn on circular logging, do a back up, then turn circular logging back off ?

I have had an issue where my Exchange backup did not work for the last 2 weeks (unknown to me) and now my log file disk is down to 8 GB free with 80 GB of log files.

I am afraid I am going to run out of log file disk space before I get the backup working properly so I am trying to prevent a database halt/dismount.

Thoughts are appreciated !

You can turn on circular logging to make more free space on the drive.

To enable circular logging refer below link :

For 2007:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb331968(v=exchg.80).aspx

For 2010

http://blog.mattsampson.net/index.php/circular_logging_exchange_2010?blog=1

For 2003

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314605

Or

Instead on enable circular logging take exchange server backup with exchange awareness software. like ntbackup or Symantec backup. to make more free space.

We use BUEXec2012 but have a disk space issue which is why my logs are growing since I can t do a backup until disk issue resolved.

Can I turn circular logging off after my BU issue resolved ?
