Changing Windows8 Editions/Product Key

I have a PC that came pre-installed with Windows 8 (not Pro).  I really wanted Remote Desktop, so I was investigating buying the Pro "Feature Pack", which seems to cost about $80 -$100.

But through my school I bought a full copy of Windows 8 Pro (much cheaper), which comes with a CD and a product key.

So I was hoping I could just change the product key on my existing Windows 8, but that didn't work.  (The Product Key you entered will not work with this edition of Windows 8).

How can I switch it to Pro and use my new key?  I'm hoping I don't need to re-install?  My computer is setup the way I wanted it.

Should be able to just punch in the serial and it will upgrade.

Otherwise there is a version compatibility issue with the product keys.  I would just doublecheck the key was entered correctly.

I went thru the same process Bought windows 8 and thought it was Pro went back to the store and purchased the upgrade feature. When I installed it did not work.
Called Microsoft and they downloaded the full Windows 8 Pro version to my computer and I had to reinstall.

I did not loose any settings or applications.

Hope this helps
You could do an Upgrade.

You should just have to put the disk in the drive, and choose an upgrade option, this should keep all the data ect on the machine, providing you clarify the information in the link!

Check it out!

Gd luck!

Try Windows Anytime Upgrade.

Windows Anytime Upgrade is now called Add Features, and it won't take my key.  I think the key it wants there is the "Pro Feature Pack" key, not the full Windows 8 Pro Key.

So I think I need to use the DVD to initiate an "upgrade" and then use the key.  I'll try that later.

Windows Keys are very unique

Best to install from DVD
