Word2010 - Opening a corrupt document

How can I open a word document that is corrupted file?
I tried opening it normally and I get the message "cannot be opened"  file is corrupt.

I do not want to buy a third-party document recovery package.

Have you tried Open and Repair ??

Click the hyperlink and if that does not work report back.
Are you able to launch Word and open the file from the File...Open menu item? If so, be aware that the September Office update has been found to cause problems with file associations and false reports of file corruption. Microsoft Word MVP Suzanne Barnhill discusses the issue and suggests repairing the file associations in http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/officeversion_other-word/unable-to-open-word-files-after-september-2013/6c2541ca-1ba8-4166-9ad5-70876e5715a7?tm=1379444703586

There are also a couple of ransomware viruses that affect Office files. I hope this isn't your problem, because the files are toast. You can remove the infection using the Microsoft Safety Scanner (http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx). The issue is discussed in Updated 9/11 - "Excel cannot open the file [filename] because the file format or file extension is not valid." opening Office files
You could try opening in Word as 'Recover text from any file'. This works better with pre-2007 (.doc) documents.

If later (.docx), then try changing the extension to .zip and see if you can unzip it.
