VMware converter

Trying to P2V a Windows 2008R2 to a test vCenter using ESX 3.5.  I tried using VM converter 4.2 and save VM to file.  This works but when I attempt to add to inventory it fails.  I tried workstation 9.x, workstation7.x and workstation 5.x/4.  from what I understand ESX 3.5 only supports workstation 4.
Any help would be much appreciated!!

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Yes I have V3.5 US and yes it does support workstation v4not sure why it's not working.
Does it matter what converter I use?
I tried VM converterversion 4.0, 4.3 and 5

You will need to use a version of converter designed for use with 3.5. Converter versions 4.0, 4.3 and 5 were not around when 3.5 was current.

e.g. Converter v3
