Something is bringing down the network

So every now and then, something is bringing down our home network.  It's only happening a few times a day, but I would like to find the culprit.

Here is our setup:

So we have a cable modem with 4 ports.  1 of the ports is attached via Ethernet to an Airport Extreme router.

In our family room, we have a D-Link Xtreme N Duo Wireless Bridge/Access Point acting as an Access Point to get a better WiFi signal in that part of the house.

We have 5 computers connecting wirelessly, and a Tivo, 2 iPads, 2 tablets and 5 cell phones.

I would like to figure out where the problem is.  I know someone is going to suggest Wireshark, and that's fine but it's a pretty intimidating program that I've never really figured out fully.

Any ideas?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Possibly upgrade the router and the access point firmware, also check the channel on the router and maybe change it. It might be getting interference from something or your neighbors. WirelessNetView is a simple app to monitor channel traffic: http://nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_network_view.html and WiFi stumbler scans to find an interference free channel: http://lifehacker.com/5538927/wifi-stumbler-scans-local-wi+fi-to-find-an-interference+free-channel

So I can't figure out for the life of me how to download WiFi Stumbler.  WirelessNetView was hard as well because the download was at the complete bottom of the page.

Sorry; I posted a review to the stumbler not the actual link itself. It's an online tool no Ned to download you just need java installed.

Strange, I don't have Java due to security issues but decided to install it for a minute just to try this app.  Tried it on Chrome and IE and Java wouldn't install.

What happens when you try to install java?

hrolsonsAuthor Commented:
It installs and says it's finished and then there's a button that says "Verify Java Install" and when I go there it says I need to install Java.  Even tried with Microsoft Security Essentials turned off.

Are you sure it actually ran the install as opposed to just downloading it? Did you try an offline or online installation? Sometimes that will happen with an online installation. You might also reset advanced settings in Internet Explorer.

Why not just leave one device disconnected and see if it happens again.  Repeat the process until you <hopefully> find the device.

Nope, still a no-go for Chrome and IE.  Tried rebooting.  It's ok though, the first program you suggested gives me plenty of info on the channels people are using around here.
