How long to take a VM snapshot of a 1TB vmdk

Hi can someone advise approx how long it takes to do a snapshot of this? - will simply taking a snapshot of a huge vmdk take a long time?

Hello,

creating a snapshot only creates a working file, so no matter the size of the vmdk file...
If you snapshot memory too, it will take more time if you have a lot of RAM.

As mentioned above...not too long. I've noticed about 2-5mins as I "quiese" the OS with my snaps for consistency. Here are 2 great VMware KBs I recommend reading up on to gain a better understanding of Snapshots, as they can be a bit confusing. Now, when deleting Snapshots, it can take a while, and depends on how long the Snap has been around. When deleting it will look like it's hanging at 95% or 98%. Just be patient and wait for the delete process to finish.

One other item to add onto what the other experts have stated is that the current load or how heavily used the VM is can slightly impact how long a VM snapshot will take to complete.

For example, a high memory resource appliance like MS SQL would take slightly long to complete a snap shot then a general purpose VM.

Hope this helps
