Corrupt administrator profile

I have a customer's Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 PC with two user accounts, one a user/administrator, the other a user/non-administrator. Neither account had a password.

The user/administrator profile has become corrupt and I cannot log on to that account.

Any attempt to fix this via the user/non-administrator account is met with an administrator password request, but as their was no password set, I cannot get beyond that point.

I have tried to activate the hidden Administrator account from the command line, but this is not allowed (presumably as I am in the user/non-administrator account).

I have tried via regedit to restore the backup of the the user profile, but that is not allowed either (again because I am trying to do that via the non-administrator account)

In short the only active administrator account profile has become corrupt and there seems no way round it.

Can anyone help?

I would try to boot with a Live Linux and delete the profile (make a copy of it somewhere else). Then boot Win and the first time Administrator logs in, it will create a new profile.

Thanks Strivoli, but I need a bit more guidance, please. How exactly do I delete the corrupt profile ?

Also, will user data/files be lost for the corrupted user (in which case I will back up first)?

Delete the folder c:\users\xxx where xxx is the administrator name.

Make a copy of the folder on a FAT/FAT32 formatted thumb drive.
The profile includes many files/folders. A corrupted profile doesn't mean that all files/folders are corrupted, usually (only) the user's registry is corrupted.
The user's most valuable data is available in the Desktop and in the Documents folders which are (both) part of the profile.

Have you tried getting into the Advance boot setings (F8) and doing a LAst Known Good Configuration.

Alternatively - If you have a bootable Win 7 Recovery Disk - you could try either a repair.

In any event - I would remove the Hard Disk - and put in in another working PC and create a full backup copy of ALL the data for all profiles.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Unfortunately many of them did not work, as the fundamental problem was that there was no administrator account enabled and initially I could not enable even the built in one.

However, the various suggestions and links led me to the following solution:

1) Used Live Linux (running from CD) to backup all users data/profiles onto an external HDD and then to delete the corrupted administrator's data/profile located at c:\users\xxx where xxx was the administrator name.

2) Rebooted the machine into Windows safe mode.

3) Clicked Start.

4) Typed cmd in the Search programs and files window.

5) Right clicked on the cmd icon.

6) Clicked on "Run as administrator".

7) Clicked Yes in UAC window

8) In the cmd window, typed "net user administrator /active:yes" (without the quotation marks).

This enabled the built-in Administrator account and I could log in to that account and re-create the corrupt user/administrator account.

I was then able to restore all required user files, to the re-created user/administrator account from the back up created in (1) above.

So thanks again to all who helped. Points allocated accordingly.
