Help With Maintenance Windows in SCCM 2012 and Update Deployment

Hi,

So I'm testing using Maintenance windows on a collection that has one server in it that's Server 2003. I've deployed the 7 updates to the collection that its in and set the Available Time and also the Installation Time to be as soon as available.

I've then set the Maintenance Window on that collection to be an hour later, for an hour in the hope that the machine will install the patches before the maintenance window or during it then then reboot the machine during the maintenance window.

The problem is that it doesn't seem to be doing this. Within the ServiceWindowManager log it says:

<![LOG[There exists a Service Window of this Type, for this duration. The Program will run eventually.]LOG]!><time="10:46:43.527-60" date="09-20-2013" component="ServiceWindowManager" context="" type="1" thread="996" file="servicewindowhandler.cpp:1706">

Is anyone able to confirm exactly how the maintenance windows should work? Are you supposed to set the deadline before a maintenance window and then when the maintenance window is hit, the installation of the updates and the reboot happens, or should the deadline being hit cause the updates to install, just the server wont reboot until the maintenance window?

Whats the best practice for using maintenance windows? I've scoured the internet and cant seem to find a 101 guide to using SCCM maintenance windows. Obviously what I want to accomplish is to deploy server OS updates to machines and then have them installed and rebooted during the maintenance windows defined on the collections they're deployed to.

Hi

Have you set your deployment to install outside maintenance windows ? this will allow the install to happen outside the maintenance window but will only allow the reboot when there is a maintenance window available.

Thanks
