how wordpress themes use featured images on posts

Hello

I am using a custom theme and I am confused by how it is using the featured image on a post.

When you add a post there is an option to add a single featured image. However this image is displayed in various different layouts and hence at various different sizes throughout the theme.

Do i upload a single image which is big enough for the maximum size the image is displayed at and then the theme will display it accordingly? I am guessing the theme will shrink the image somehow. But the problem with this is that the image sizes arent always in the same aspect ratio so you get some distortion of the images.

Is there anyway to upload different versions of the image at the different sizes? I cant see anyway to do this

thanks a lot

Yes.  If you look in the theme's functions.php file you should see calls to the function add_image_size() which takes the images you upload and resizes them according to the definitions in the function.  So each image you upload ends up creating three or four files.

If you browse your uploads folder, you should see them.
