Integrating Lync 2013 into Exchange 2010

I'm attempting to integrate Lync 2013 into Exchange 2010 however experiencing difficulties.

I followed the how to article at:

I have it setup however when I browse to the Outlook Web App interface, I get the following error:
Instant Messaging isn't available right now. The Contact List will appear when the service becomes available

I looked in the event log for both the exchange server as well as Lync but there were no errors that have appeared.

What's the best method of diganosing communication failures between Exchange and Lync?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I tried following that article previously with the same outcome.

This may be a foolish question but, do I need to install Exchange Unified Messaging Role on the Exchange Server?

Yes I have completed those steps.

After a week straight of working on this, I have finally been able to figure it out.

I used the external domain name ( rather then the internal FQDN (nt-exchange01.domain.local) and it started working immediately.
