SQL express studio

I have installed SQL express 2008 with SP3 on 2008R2. I want to install the management studio express but when I download and run the management studio express I receive an error from program compatibility assistant stating I must apply sql server 2008 service pack 1 or later. I checked in the logs and sql express reports its already on SP3.
Any ideas how I resolve this?

OS details in original post. I am running 2008 express not 2012

I have run this file from a different MS link and although I can run it without errors. I can't see any where to install the studio even under tools. I seem to have all the same options for the management studio exe as I have for the original sql express exe.

Try this.

Go here

Run the update check.
See if there are any more updates for:
 SQL Server
SQL Management

If not, go to Add Remove programs. uninstall SQL management

Go here

Make sure all requirements are met, then install and try again
Hi guys,

When it prompts for compatibilty issues you can run the program and install the SQL Management Studio and later apply the latest service pack.

Removed all, searched again reinstalled again and it worked.  I didn't install any extra updates. It seems there are a few versions of sql express and sql express studio available but not all work together..
