I've seen NOT having a local password setup cause problems. Try that, and or when Server Configuration page opens up and asks you which accounts to use, choose, either browse for you local account and enter the new password, or type SYSTEM for the user, with no password. Give that a shot.
Is this a domain PC? if it's a workgroup PC is there a password set for the local account you are using to install the software? And Lastly I guess, does the password you created for the service meet the requirements?

The password must meet the Microsoft SQL Server Strong Password requirements: •Does not contain all or part of the user's account name
•Is more than eight characters in length
•Contains characters from at least three of the following categories: ¿English uppercase characters (A through Z)
¿English lowercase characters (a through z)
¿Base 10 digits (0 through 9)
¿Nonalphabetic characters (for example: !, $, #, %)

This laptop is in my home and is not connected to a network. It also does not have a local password.  Do I need to put a local password on the PC to get this to work?

   Thanks again,

is it5 64 bit OS?
start install from "run as admin" even you are local ADMIN
Before install create local wind account with admin rights
or use your login info PCname\your account
\\password that you use to login on your comp
