I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Because you are applying the following style directly to it
.leftcolumn {
    left: 0;
    position: absolute;
    top: 10px;
    width: 180px;

Open in new window

As to where it should be I don't know....?

I must be missing something
I thought the page styles over rode the style sheet if
they are after the reference to the style sheet
Depends, inheritance is quirky, if the other css is targetted from another element then the css above would take precedence because it is being applied directly to the element.
