Unable to configure mail in mobile device for one server - exchange 2003

I have 2 back end exchange 2003 servers and one front end exchange 2003 server. for users mailbox in backend server1 we are able to configure their mails in mobile devices, but for user mailbox in backend server2 are unable to configure their mail in mobile devices. If we move any user mailbox from backend server 2 to 1, then they can able to configure.

While checking I found there is no microsoft active-sync virtual directory in backend end server 2. is this might be the problem? but all users are accessing the mail using front end server IP..

what might be the issue?

Hi Sumesh,

But I want to know, is the active sync virtual directory required in the back end server where the mailbox is there or only in the front end server is fine..

thanks

What about your OWA? Do you have virtual directory in both?

Problems using Powershell and Active Directory?

Managing Active Directory does not always have to be complicated.  If you are spending more time trying instead of doing, then it's time to look at something else. For nearly 20 years, AD admins around the world have used one tool for day-to-day AD management: Hyena. Discover why

No - the Activesync virtual directory isn't required on the backend server - it is required only on the frontend server.

ok. then what might be the issue, for user mailbox in backend1 is working fine in mobile and user mailbox in backend2 is not working, as for both backend server's same front end server we are using..

What are the results from https:// testexchangeconnectivity.com for a user on server 2?  Use manual settings (no autodiscover).

actually we don't have SSL certificate, so in the above link for both mail accounts it gives error msg..

While the ActiveSync virtual directory isn't required on the backend server, it should still be there. Therefore I would have to suspect that there are problems with the other virtual directories. I would start by recreating them on that server with the problems following this guide: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883380

Yes, I tried with Method 3: Edit the Metabase.xml file steps, But this step did not created the missing virtual directory. So, I am not sure to try the method 1 and method 2. In that we need to delete other exchange related Virtual directory also. So worried, if it not created after following steps, then I will loose existing Virtual directory (exchange, exchadmin etc)also..

If you lose the other virtual directories then the server has a more significant problem.
ActiveSync makes calls via the /exchange virtual directory, so that could be where the problem is.

Hi,

You means, If I try method 1 or 2 and If the Virtual directory not created in the back end server, will it effect the OWA and other access?

Thanks

Yes, it probably will, because that is how Exchange gets the data. However that is also how ActiveSync gets the data, so you have no choice but to try it.
