Guide me to the best Web-hosting company to migrate into

Hi there,

I need to advise a friend of mine about web-hosting companies, he has a high download rate site currently working on a dedicated server consisting of 8X Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz CPUs, 8 Gigs of RAM and 2xSSDs one of 300 Gigs to manage his VBulletin Forum and the other is SSD of 120 Gigs to manage attachments within this forum due to the strong download rate, monthly 26TB and daily around 750 Gigs, total data on the site is 400 GB and has 18 thousand unique visitor a day and from 107000 thousand visit per day, page rank on Alexa is 50000 and google is 3 .

It has three main sites one is a VBulletin, the other is word press, the third is a huge audio library of MP# and other audio formats, currently they are considering this plan:

MG 2R      Intel E5-2670      8 / 16      2.6 GHz      128 GB      2 x 160GB SSD

From OVH .

But we think running costs are becoming very expensive, and that there is some way to tweak and the system specs  to serve visitor download needs from forum attachments and keep performance and save on costs, any more cost effective way for hosting this site? I'm asking because my friend is running this site as charity with no revenue .

BlueHost.com is a very good web hosting service. They help many on my clients migrate over to them. One was a audio book dealer who needs are similiar but not quite as big as yours. Blue Host is pretty good and haven't heard of too many complaints or issues.

Thanks TheITJedis, but I see no options to customize the package and the price for premium is almost the same as OVH and OVH is way better i.e SSD and cutting edge CPU wit 20 Meg cache and 8 cores. ¿¿Any thoughts please?

I would get a smaller hosting service and host the files for downloading in the cloud.  http://aws.amazon.com/s3/#importexport.   I thought of http://www.rackspace.com/cloud/files/pricing/  but that would be very expensive.

I have been using dedicated hosting with liquidweb for the past 5 years http://www.liquidweb.com and have been very happy with their level of service and help with server issues.    They have a couple of options with a private cloud if you need to vary requirements from month to month http://www.liquidweb.com/StormServers/pricing.html or standard and custom dedicated configurations.  http://www.liquidweb.com/dedicated/

If that web site is working well where it is, your friend should figure how to raise some money to support it.  Ask for donations.  Just transferring 400GB of data is going to be a problem.  Do you have the data and databases backed up somewhere?

@GaryC123 He is paying currently 440$ a month, the OVH server he is planning to migrate to will be 250$ a month.

He as also offered dedicated outsourced support/admin it will be around 142$ a month from a third part company .

@padas Thanks a lot for your advise, first impression it looks more expensive from what I have,  I will try to go again with a colleague through the links today and configure something similar to what I have and let you know .

@DaveBaldwin Backups are part of the 400 GB, may be if we remove the extra backups we will have total of 2 x 160GB will be enough temporarily .

Hi there I was recommended this package:

http://www.hetzner.de/en/hosting/produkte_rootserver/ex40ssd

Any thoughts or updates? About architecture optimization we should do on the server side ?

GaryCommented:
That seems ridiculously cheap, I have one unmanaged VPS that is 13€ a month and has nowhere near that spec even taking into account the price difference. And I thought that was cheap.
Dedicated server, 20TB of data, 24/7 email/phone support - it makes me suspicious.
The reviews of them are mixed.

@GaryC123 You mean that http://www.hetzner.de/en/hosting/produkte_rootserver/ex40ssd is cheap?

Is one 4 cores CPU not enough? I mean moving from 8X CPUs to 1 CPU? given the optimization on SSD ?

GaryCommented:
Yep that one, also 480GB storage doesn't give you much leg room.
I would be wary of their 20TB limit if you keep using 26TB every month.
Lots of hosts will say that knowing people will not normally use anywhere near it.
Have a look around at what other service providers charge for bandwidth
Amazon charge $0.12 per GB and they would be cheapish - that's $300 per month. Now that is PAYG but gives you an idea and what it should be costing.

GaryCommented:
You never mentioned if you are looking for a managed or unmanaged server?
0
Luqman ShantalPrincipalAuthor Commented:
I'm looking for a managed server .
0
GaryCommented:
They are strictly unmanaged
Maybe you should be looking at
http://www.hetzner.de/en/hosting/produktmatrix/managed-server-produktmatrix
No SSD

Maybe you should give them a call and see what their support prices are for the server you are looking at - cannot find anything online

Luqman ShantalPrincipalAuthor Commented:
My understanding is that we can get a third party to manage that server .
0
GaryCommented:
Of course you can.
If you go with them let us know how you get on.

Luqman ShantalPrincipalAuthor Commented:
But I did not get an answer regarding the effect of CPU  and importance for my setup, if I move from what I have to the german package what might be the impact?
0
GaryCommented:
CPU shouldn't have much of an impact, fast data access and memory are the more important factors.
Since your site/s seem to be more about downloading the setup should be fine.
Since we don't know the inner workings of your site we cannot give any specific answers.
Why don't you just try them for a month, without giving up your current host.
For $60 dollars it's not a major investment if it doesn't work out

The only thing I would want added to the setup is an traditional HDD backup, I imagine there is a lot of reading of the SSD's and as yet they still only have a short life span

From this link I found out that for a forum you have a high number of queries and thus you need to add a number of CPUs or improve cores .

I think the below will quite address my design needs and the most customizable dedicated wizard I have seen so far, but is quite expensive .

https://blog.hivelocity.net/2013/07/16/dedicated-servers-built-and-optimized-for-vbulletin-now-available/

Still searching for the most cost efficient and effective solution to meet the needs .

GaryCommented:
Read it again, it says nothing about adding more cores.

Sorry it was the wrong link I put.

http://blog.7l.com/complete-guide-dedicated-servers-and-how-to-choose-an-internet-server-2/

. Server programs, such as Apache or MySQL, rely on processor speeds and server memory, whereas the network speeds are mostly dependent on the size of the webpages being sent to visitors. If they’re graphic-heavy or have audio or video, that effects your network speeds so the faster the better.

Also I took this impression from these configuration where they put 8 CPUS:

http://www.urljet.com/vbulletin-dedicated-servers.php

May be I'm having the wrong conclusion .

GaryCommented:
There is nothing in the links to say you need more cores.
Every site is different and you have to tailor it around your needs. Sometimes this is just a case of testing the water.
If you have good caching system in place then the likes of WP and vBulleting will be supersonic as they are only reading cached files - they will hardly ever hit the db.
You may have 107,000 page views a day (I presume this is what you meant) but most of them could very easily be running from cached files in the memory, of which on the new host you have plenty of.
And with the requirements of your site I would hope you do have a cache running!

I wouldn't exactly call that first link a Complete Guide

Also I took this impression from these configuration where they put 8 CPUS
They also have a package with a dual core - it means nothing.
They are just putting gloss on it to make it look attractive, you could have 32 cores but if everything else in the box is crap then they are just wasted.
Have you actually monitored your current server to see how and where resources are being used?

Luqman ShantalPrincipalAuthor Commented:
So when should CPU be needed?
0
Scott Fell, EE MVEDeveloper & EE ModeratorCommented:
Also don't forget about your required bandwidth.   The link you provided shows only 2,000 GB Bandwidth.  You said you needed 26,000 GB.  What is the extra cost?
0
GaryCommented:
CPU is needed all the time, but how much you need is unknown. That's why I said monitor your current server to see how it is performing.

Thanks a lot, your comments quite helped me, My friend is still assessing them, and we will reach to a solution based on this, currently he has extended his plan for an extra month .
