Win8 Pro 32bit oem install failure

I bought this dvd from amazon. Wanted to change one of my xp systems to win8.
ran dvd install (which took quite some time 40+ minutes). when completed I was left with a blank and a unrecognized hard drive.

Although possible it's hard to believe that my hard drive decided to die during this install.
But now bios, disk utils, etc do not see the drive.

Not sure what to do, anyone hear of anything like this?

Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Please describe in detail.

If you got reason to believe it died, why not test with disk testing tools? The manufacturer of your hard disk offers it as a free download.

Some troublesome issues:

XP system and Windows 8 use different Boot Up methods. OEM (XP and Windows 8) uses different BIOS embeddings.

OEM "version" bought on Amazon?

Hi Windows 8 uses a different type of partitioning.  You will need to reformat the drive completely and start again.  Go into the bios and change boot options back to legacy mode and you will see the drives existing partitions.

Nrhode yes
McKnife did all of that before I entered this question
aadin it appeared to go thru the setup loading files for about 30-40 minutes before it died
trhitc legacy mode options in bios do not show partition info (dell dimension PC). Nothing mentioned in the limited documentation about reformatting

You used a hdd diagnostic tool and it did not see the drive...ok. So please connect it to another computer before we go on.
