"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Ok so going to 8.6 is a straight upgrade.  Going to 9.0 would need a UCSS contract in place in which you would have to go through the Cisco Product Upgrade Tool.

So to upgrade you need to check the software and hardware compatibility charts.  So if you are running CCX for instance there are certain requirements as to what versions will work with CUCM.

Here is the upgrade procedure doc for 8.6:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/cucos/8_6_1/cucos/iptpch7.html

Here is the upgrade procedure for 9.0

Anything pre 8.6 to 8.6 or higher is not that straight forward. A refresh file needs to be applied prior to applying the real upgrade patch:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/rel_notes/8_6_1/cucm-rel_notes-861.html#wp1971086

Going through Kenboonejr docs and suggestions is still required, plus the above note I am mentioning here. On these regards, please read the paragraph that says:

If you are upgrading your software on HP7825H3 or HP7828H3 hardware, there is no option to revert to the previous version of Cisco Unified Communications Manager. If you do not back up your system data before starting the software upgrade process your data will be lost if your upgrade fails for some reason. If you chose to revert to the prior version, you will need to install the prior version and restore your data from your DRS backup.

We use CUCM, Unity Connection and Presence in three virtual machines, all have redundant pair (publisher and subscriber). VMware host running in v4.0, Below are my approach for upgradation. Correct me if any concern in below steps

1. Backup of all configuration  and data
2. Upgrade Virtual Machine host from v4.0 to v.5.0
2. Check the Hardware requirement for CUCM v8.6 and upgrade if required
3. Upgrade call manager to v8.6 (publisher first then same in subscriber)
4. Do the same steps (2 & 3) for Unity connection and Presence
5. Test

I hope the configurations remain same after upgrade.

You do not need to upgrade the ESXi host:

http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Virtualization_for_Cisco_Unified_Communications_Manager_%28CUCM%29#Version_8.6.28x.29

BTW, you don't say "upgradation", that word doesn't exist. Apologies I accept I'm a word freak =(

That link will also help you check for the virtual hardware requirements.

But I prefer to get the host to latest version. Is there any reason for not to upgrade ESXi host?
0
José MéndezCommented:
Not that I can think of. Higher versions of ESXi consume more memory. And I can't even back up that statement with a VMWare document.

So do you guys agree to proceed with the above steps?.
Also License/certficate required to reapply if I upgrade CUCM version or Hardware?.
0
Ken BooneNetwork ConsultantCommented:
License is needed if going from 8.x to 9.x   going from 8.5 o 8.6 no license necessary.
