Exchange 2010 Email Policy Creation

I wanted to know if I could implement a Exchange/Email  policy to delete emails older than 13 months? and if so, when Implemented will the emails currently in default folders be removed anything older than 13 months?  I don't need to archive them, however I may setup journaling for disaster situation or something.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Yes you can create Transport rule to automatically delete emails older than 13 months.

Refer the below link.

If I created the email policy to remove emails after 13 months, What happens if the users saved or dragged the emails from Outlook into a Shared Drive folder. Would those be deleted as well? (E.G; If an email was moved outside of outlook to a folder about 6 years ago. When I implement the policy, will it also remove those?

depends on which folder you have applied the rules. You can apply this rule to a single or multiple folders. If you are moving or dragging emails to folder on which rule is applied, and mail is older than 13 months then definitely it will automatically deleted as per rule.

These folders being a shared folder on a separate server in some folders underneath folders. Exchange can trace those?

I currently have no retention policy in place. If someone currently has many emails that were saved as or dragged from Outlook onto another server in some folder. If I implement this policy will it also remove those, or just from the policy implement forward would just delete them?> I hope this makes sense. We just have lots of users who saved emails our from outlook onto other mapped drives. Would those go away?>

You mean users have created PST file on their shared drive and they keeps moving old emails to that PST. In this case, email will not be deleted from that folders.

Yes, users have moved emails to .pst folders. Those per what you are saying won't be deleted. Cool..

What about emails that were moved to a shared folder, that are not in a .pst file? many users have dragged emails from Outlook in to a company's folder that is just a shared folder. We have a claims department that has multiple folders created on a Application Server referencing claims and so forth, they have dragged emails to those folders for reference. Those also won't be deleted?

I was planning on using the Retention Policy Tags.
